Wardens

Wardens are humans who protect the Book of Sorhineth.

Brenna Kennedy (Redemption)

Hi, I’m Brenna Kennedy, mild-mannered librarian and Warden for the Book of Sorhineth, a sacred book I hold for a species called the Terrans.

Not that I’ve ever met a Terran or had to actually do anything to protect the book. From what my grandmother, the Last Warden, has told me, I’m not sure I ever want to meet a Terran. From what I've seen on the news and in everyday life, they’ve pretty much abandoned their supposed credo of being stewards of the earth.

My brothers are very protective of me and while they’ve taught me ways to protect both myself and the Sorhineth, I know one of them would have been a better choice as Warden, but that is not how it works…so I’m stuck with it. I just wish that Gram was still alive, so she could tell me what all this really means.

Claire’s Questions:

Q: In your opinion, what makes a hero?
A: I don’t know that it’s quantifiable, but when I look around, I see it everyday in my brothers.

Q: How so?
A: Well, one’s a firefighter, one’s a cop, and one’s a trauma surgeon. Those guys are heroes each and every day.

Q: So your brothers are all in very dangerous businesses. What about you?
A: (laughs) I do the least dangerous thing of everyone. I’m a librarian in Boston. The only thing I’m in danger from is a paper cut.

Q: But what about being a Warden?
A: That’s a family legend. Even if there were any substance to it, my Gram, the last Warden, died before she could pass much on. My biggest challenge is figuring out how to decode the Sorhineth.

Q: Exactly what is the Sorhineth?
A: Hell if I know. It’s got serious ju-ju, though. I just can’t read the damned thing.

Q: What makes you want to?
A: Are you kidding? It’s a book. I read anything and everything printed on a page, and something that’s part of my heritage, even if that heritage is murky as shit, is quite simply fascinating.

Q: Have you ever been in love?
A: That’s kind of a change in topics, now isn’t it?

Q: So have you?
A: (frowns) I thought so once, but it was a no-go. I’m going with happy-for-now rather than happily-ever-after these days.
